The D-Day Story Collection

map

A map showing the southern part of Hayling Island, Hampshire, prepared for Exercise 'Fabius II (a landing exercise by 50th Division, carried out shortly before D-Day). Scale 1:12,500, defence overprint, produced by 30th Corps, British Army. 'Enemy defences' are printed in red along the seafront. 'Easy Red' beach is marked on the map by hand. This belonged to Mr Oliver H. Perks, who was a Forward Observation Officer with 90th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, part of 231 Brigade, 50th Division. On D-Day his Landing Craft, Tank (LCT), got waterlogged while crossing the Channel, and had to return to Shoreham, so he did not land in Normandy until three days later. He served in North West Europe until the end of the war.
