The D-Day Story Collection

red ensign

A Merchant Navy red ensign flag that was flown by the M.V. Empire Russell as she entered Cherbourg Harbour in 7.1944. She became the first vessel to discharge a cargo at the port after its capture by the Allies on 26.6.1944 and the subsequent mine-clearing operations. She was the largest tanker (8,202 tons) of a fleet of 57 tankers operating from Hamble Jetty to Normandy during the campaign in France, 1944. Empire Russell was apparently damaged in a collision with an American landing craft shorlty before D-Day, and her first journey over to Normandy was delayed by having to undergo repairs.
