The D-Day Story Collection

photograph

A photograph showing British troops relaxing on board the top deck of US Navy Landing Ship, Tank (LST) 629 (or LST 529?) en route to the French coast, early on D-Day. The troops are largely sat on top of military vehicles. Another ship and barrage balloon can be seen in the distance. One of a series of 13 photographs, part of the papers of Canon F.W. (Mike) Crooks, a Royal Navy chaplain at the time of D-Day. On D-Day he crossed the English Channel on US Navy Landing Ship, Tank (LST) 529, and went ashore at Courseulles, Juno Beach. He stayed in Normandy for several days and then returned to the UK with wounded troops.
