white ensign

A white ensign flag flown on a barge that belonged to 5th Landing Barge Flotilla, at D-Day. It has a hoisting rope attached at top and bottom. It previously belonged to Louis Lindsay, who was flotilla electrician with this Flotilla. They were based in Langstone Harbour before D-Day. His barge was meant to arrive at Sword Beach on D-Day, but it had engine trouble and did not arrive there until 7.6.1944.
