The D-Day Story Collection

A Navy, Army and Air Forces Institutes (NAAFI) cap badge which belonged to Joan Fitzpatrick (later Mrs Joan Malthouse). In the period leading up to D-Day, she volunteered to work under canvas, not knowing exactly what would be involved. As a result, prior to D-Day she worked in Marshalling Area Camp B7 at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. The accomodation there was basic, and she slept in a tent attached to the NAAFI canteen. Trenches were dug in case of air raids, and mail was censored. NAAFI personnel were sealed into the camp prior to D-Day. She joined the NAAFI at the age of 18.
