In 1944, thousands of servicemen and women marched through Portsmouth on their way to board ships and landing craft for Normandy. Eyewitnesses often say that they ‘knew something was happening’.
On 6 June 2019, re-enactors marched through Portsmouth down the exact same routes as those used in 1944.
‘We Knew Something Was Happening’ encouraged local people to think about the D-Day stories in their city, and how men marched through Portsmouth in 1944 on their way to Normandy. It evoked the sights, sounds and emotions of the time, particularly for local people who must have wondered where they were going, and how many of them were going to come home.
The event was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the transformation of The D-Day Story.
