Army testing site, Hankley Common

A concrete wall built here by Royal Canadian Engineers, as a consequence of problems experienced by the Canadians in the Aug 1942 Dieppe Raid. Various devices were tested on it, to find ways to destroy similar structures (resulting breaches in the wall can still be seen). The Petard AVRE tank was developed from these trials. The Anti-Tank Experimental Unit here was absorbed into 79th Armoured Division.

Hankley Common is a part of the Longmoor Training Area for the British Army.
