The base at Tarbat Ness was set up for British Forces due to land at Sword Beach in Normandy could get some training prior to the actual invasion. In less than a month around 900 inhabitants of the local area were evacuated to clear the site of any civilians that might get hurt because live ammunition would be used, and to prevent details being found out about the exercises.
Training included practice landings on the nearby Beach at Gaza and around the Tarbat Ness peninsula, but most training at Tarbat Ness was on land and included things such as fighting once they were off the Beach and general Landing Craft maintenance.
