During the Second World War, a network of tunnels was speciallly created underneath this Victorian fort. At the time of D-Day it housed the Combined Operations Underground Headquarters. From here, the progress of the Allied invasion fleet was co-ordinated and monitored. The headquarters staff included personnel from all three services, and members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) formed a major part of the staff.
