Plymouth was the main embarkation point for troops assembled in Marshalling Area A in South West Devon. Troops who embarked through Plymouth were part of the US 4th Infantry Division, and landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. Troops embarked via sites on the River Plym at Cattedown and Turnchapel, and at Saltash Passage on the River Tamar.
There were also a large number of US Army Headquarters in the Plymouth area, including the Headquarters of the US VII Corps and the Headquarters of Marshalling Area L, and other units such as Post Offices and Hospitals.
